History of our Church

St. Brigid’s Episcopal Church was first established in 1995 as a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem (https://diobeth.org/). The name of St. Brigid was chosen in honor of our Diocesan partnership with the Dioceses of Meath and Kildare in Ireland.

The original congregation, which consisted of four families, began worshiping in the basement of a branch of the Nazareth National Bank and Trust Co. in Moorestown, PA.  The Rev. Jane Teter, a member of the Bishop’s staff, was our first vicar.

In 1998 we moved to our current location at 310 Madison Avenue in Nazareth, PA.  The former Hanan Memorial United Evangelical Church building was purchased to create a more permanent home for our growing community. The building, which had also been used as a Methodist Church, was built in 1901.  At the time of purchase, it had been unoccupied for some time and required the skilled hands of the new congregation to bring it from dusty neglect to a worthy place of worship.

Former rectors include: The Reverend Jane Teter, The Reverend Judith Snyder, The Very Reverend Robert D. Schenkel, Jr., and The Reverend William Martin.
